About Lourens
Lourens Human is an experienced counsellor with a long career in counselling and psychology. He practised as a counselling psychologist in South Africa for many years and has worked as a counsellor in Australia since 2018. He is an ACA counsellor and brings 29 years of clinical and academic experience to his work.
He spent much of his career at the University of Pretoria teaching and supervising postgraduate students. He coordinated a master’s programme, taught career and counselling psychology, and supervised research students through MA and PhD projects. Alongside his academic roles he maintained a part-time practice focusing on career, counselling and sport psychology.
After moving to Australia in 2017, he provided therapeutic counselling at a Victorian retreat for people who had experienced severe trauma, including veterans. Since 2020 he has worked with people in South Australia who have experienced crime-related trauma, such as homicide, sexual assault, domestic violence and child sexual abuse.
In sessions he helps people manage stress, anxiety, depression and major life changes. He also supports clients dealing with career questions, grief, guilt and isolation. He works with issues related to ageing, cancer, substance use, fatherhood, midlife concerns and veteran-related challenges.
His approach draws on evidence-based therapeutic techniques. He aims to make sessions practical and straightforward, focusing on readable goals and steady progress. People looking for help with work and wellbeing concerns may find his background especially relevant.
How evidence-based techniques translate online
Many of Lourens's approaches come from evidence-based therapeutic techniques that emphasise clear steps and measurable progress. One common technique focuses on identifying unhelpful thinking and testing new, realistic thoughts to reduce anxiety and low mood; this helps with stress, anxiety and depression. Another approach involves trauma-focused methods that gently help people process distressing events and reduce their impact on daily life; this can help people affected by crime-related trauma and other traumatic experiences.Choosing the right approach is part of the work together. He discusses goals and preferences with each person and adapts methods to what feels most useful. That collaborative process helps decide which techniques to use and how quickly to move between them.
Practical benefits of online therapy include easier fitting of sessions into a busy week and fewer travel demands. Online work can make shorter check-ins or more frequent follows-ups simpler to schedule. Please confirm the current session options before booking so you know which formats are offered at that time.
